Bred this way! Max the poodle is transformed into outfits of Lady Gaga for hilarious calendar

By HARRIET COOKE

Sausage dog: Max modelling his own version of Lady Gaga's iconic meat dress, which was a sought-after Halloween costume in 2010

Wacky singer Lady Gaga has met her match in the canine world - in a cross-dressing poodle dubbed 'Lay Z Gaga'.
Seven-year-old Max was rescued as a stray and now stars in a calendar inspired by the Born This Way singer.
The mutt modelled streaky bacon, a blonde wig and lipstick to recreate some of the music idol's most iconic outfits.

Outlandish: Lady Gaga, pictured, at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in her meat dress

The calendar was the brainchild of Lara Jo Regan, 47, who wanted to show off the 'beauty and potential' of stray animals through artwork.
She said: 'I tried to imagine what Lady Gaga might fashion herself if she were reincarnated as an aging, lethargic poodle with not much of a wardrobe budget.'
Ms Regan, a fine art documentary and filmmaker from Los Angeles, took Max in after he was left homeless during the economic meltdown in 2008.

She said the 2ft-tall pooch had looked like a ‘former aristocratic drag queen who fell on hard times’.
The artist's fascination with animal artwork began in her childhood when she assigned detailed human profiles to her pets based on their looks, behaviours and habits.

Spiky: Max the dog modelling a design worn by Lady Gaga, with a matching bone

She added: 'Artists trying to show the extraordinary qualities in things other people may dismiss or dispose of is nothing new - I'm just applying it to stray and otherwise unwanted animals.'
Lady Gaga and her outlandish, colourful outfits proved a particularly fertile ground for this project.

The singer's meat dress - a creation made from six pieces of sewn-together steak teamed with a matching meat hat and bag - was a sought-after Halloween costume when it first appeared in 2010.
At the time, it came with a warning that it would last for a maximum of three hours before distergrating - but for Max, it seemed the the toughest challenge was not eating it.

Now it's Putin the bird man: Latest animal stunt sees Russian president take to skies in micro glider as 'chief crane'

By WILL STEWART

Fly away home: Russian President Vladimir Putin flies in a motorized deltaplane to lead young Siberian cranes on their migration path

No mission is too much for former KGB spy turned strongman leader Vladimir Putin as he sets off on his latest bid to put right the wrongs of nature by teaching birds to fly.
Hang-gliding over Arctic Siberia this week, the all-Russian action man guided white cranes which seem to have lost the instinct to migrate south to a warmer climate for the winter.
The aim was to set the endangered birds on course for Asia and as with his previous action-man ventures - which included sedating a tiger, tagging a white whale, and offering tender loving care and a tracking collar to a polar bear - the Kremlin announced total success.

Nice suit, Mr President: Putin kitted up for the flight in a baggy white outfit, gloves and goggles - but sadly no beak

As opposition groups and bloggers mercilessly mocked his flying lesson for birds, Putin's PR machine made clear that after a false start all five juvenile cranes had followed the lead bird - the Russian president dressed in flapping white overalls - and flown for the required distance.
It is hoped the cranes will now fly from Kushavet ornithological research station to Tyumen, further south in Siberia, before taking off for middle Asia and a warm winter.
'For cranes, the parent is a man in a white robe,' explained Yuri Markin, the director of the game reserve. 'They don't remember a particular person. They remember the white robe and hood, or on the ultralight, a white helmet - and a special beak that is worn on the head.'

Watch the birdie: Putin keeps a careful eye on one of the cranes while waiting in a motorized hang-glider

Pictures do not show Putin wearing the beak, probably to avoid yet more vilification from his foes, on the three motorised hang gliding flights he made on the remote on the Yamal Peninsula in the Arctic.
'It is amazing how the birds get used to it,' Putin told state television still dressed in his pilot's outfit of helmet and goggles.
'They do not fear the hang-glider and they overtook it. They are amazing. It's a very good feeling.'
He has been preparing for 18 months, he said, and ahead of the crane-flight he clocked up 17 hours flying the hang glider.

Instant fame: The three-month-old Siberian cranes got their moment of TV glory

Puppy love: Rachel Zoe's son Skyler gets more than he bargains for on an outing in Beverly Hills

By VIRGINIA SKEELS

Dog Day Afternoon: Rachel Zoe crouches down with son Skyler as they pet a small dog in Beverly Hills today

Some children are scared by their first encounters with dogs, while others are immediately delighted.
Rachel Zoe's 17-month-old son Skyler fell squarely into the latter camp yesterday, when he and his parents stopped to pet a couple of dogs in Beverly Hills.
Watched over closely by his mother, the toddler smiled as he eagerly patted two dogs, which were small enough not to intimidate the tot.
Skyler was momentarily caught off guard when one of the puppies jumped up to lick him, scrunching up his face and turning away in surprise.

Puppy love: Rachel shows her excited son how to pat the dogs ... and one of the dogs jumps up to lick him

But the toddler continued to laugh and pat the puppies after he recovered from the extra dose of enthusiasm from one of the dogs.
Crouching down beside her son and joining in the puppy love, Zoe wore a long grey sleeveless T-shirt over boot-cut jeans.
The 40-year-old stylist to the stars rounded out her outfit with a wide-brimmed black hat, large dark sunglasses, black platform shoes and a patent leather tote.
Skyler, meanwhile, wore cute denim overalls over a white sleeveless T-shirt.
And puppies weren't the only new friends the toddler was making. At one point he also stopped to exchange pleasantries with a police officer.

After all the excitement was over, Rachel sat with Skyler and husband Roger Berman, stopping to take a break on a sidewalk window front.
The stylist-turned-designer once told InStyle magazine that her son is her favourite person to style because he has 'no opinion' on the hundreds of designer outfits she puts on him, unlike her clientele of A-list divas.
'Every minute I have to buy things for my son,' the notoriously skinny fashionista said. 'It is too much fun. It is like dressing a live doll. He has no opinion.'

Clothes horse: Rachel wore a grey sleeveless T-shirt over boot-cut jeans, a wide-brimmed hat and dark shades

Mother and son were also spotted out yesterday in West Hollywood.
Skyler was seen wriggling in his mothers arms, as she struggled to hold on to him.
At one point she could be seen whispering in his ear, perhaps in a bid to sooth her excitable son.

Family unit: Roger Berman sits with his son Skyler and wife Rachel

The stylist to the stars was clad in a flowing black dress for her outing while Skyler was dressed in a striped onesie.
Rachel didn't bother trying to make him wear a hat - recent attempts have seen him throw it off as he proved quite the unwilling model.
Over the weekend Zoe took her son out shopping, trying on three different trilby hats on her little man.

Puppy love: Janice Dickinson puckered up to her beloved pet bulldog Lloyd today as they went for a stroll in Malibu

She fell in love with him back in September 2010 when she spied him at a Sherman Oaks pet store.
And it seems the bond between Janice Dickinson and her pet bulldog Lloyd is stronger than ever.
The 57-year-old self-proclaimed world's first supermodel planted a big sloppy kiss on the pooch's mouth as they went for a Fourth Of July stroll today.
Crouching down to her beloved canine, Janice puckered her famous supermodel lips for the display of affection.
And in return, Lloyd gave her a sloppy lick.
During the outing Janice paraded her famous toned pins in a pair of denim hotpants.

Best of friends: Janice fell for her pooch back in 2010 when she purchased him from a Sherman Oaks pet store when he was just a puppy

She paired the tiny shorts with a grey T-shirt and a hoodie.
And it appears that the mother-of-two had some aquatic activities planned for the day, as a bikini was seen peeking from behind her top.
Wearing minimal make-up, Janice had slipped on a pair of bright pink sunglasses.
And it seems she was in the mood for striking a pose as she gave the camera some love.

Janice purchased her pet bulldog in 2010 after instantly falling for the white and beige pup.

She added: 'I wish I wasn't famous. I wish I would go along anonymously.

-34-year-old fell as his former girlfriend of four years looked on in horror with the Duchess of Cornwall
-Horse and jockey both recovering well

By KATHERINE FAULKNER

Worrying: Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, left, and Zara Phillips, centre, reactin horror as Robert Johnson falls badly on Wishful Thinking on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival

Hand pressed to her mouth in horror, her face is a picture of fear and concern.
And little wonder – this is the moment Zara Phillips saw her jockey ex-boyfriend thrown from his horse at Cheltenham yesterday.
The queen’s granddaughter could only watch aghast from the royal box as Richard Johnson tumbled spectacularly to the ground during his race. His horse crashed through the railings and into the crowd, drawing gasps from thousands of bystanders.

Horrific: The jockey and horse collide into the barrier and photographers leaving Mr Johnson sprawled on the ground

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, was standing beside Zara and winced as the horse fell on to Johnson, crushing his left leg.
The injured jockey was lifted into an ambulance on a stretcher, in visible pain. He was taken for emergency treatment and ruled out of the rest of the day’s races.
Last night Johnson was said to be recovering well, having suffered only a soft tissue injury. ‘He had a lucky escape because it looked a terrible fall,’ a racing official said.
‘He is obviously shaken, but physically, he is in remarkably good shape.’

Anxious time: Despite their stormy four-year relationship, Zara is clearly concerned about the condition of ex-boyfriend Robert Johnson

If it ain't broke! Sarah Harding keeps up her style staple as she steps out in knee-high boots and fur gilet for dog walk

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Stylish get-up: Sarah Harding steps out in yet another chic ensemble, wearing her staple knee-high boots and fur gilet

She's stepped out in a number of stylish outfits recently, completed each time with a pair of chic boots.
And it now appears Sarah Harding may in fact have the largest boot collection around.
The singer stepped out in yet another ensemble earlier today, this time wearing a pair of black leather knee-highs with buckle detailing.
Sarah donned her staple black fur gilet, matching it with a bright red top and leggings as she went for a lengthy dog walk.

Dog walk: The singer was enjoying a healthy day out in her local Primrose Hill neighbourhood in London on Saturday afternoon

It was only last week that she paraded around in a striking tan pair of knee-highs.
The 30-year-old pop star then followed the look with her buckled black pair just days later.
And they're obviously becoming one of her favourite items as she wore them again this afternoon.
Earlier in the day Sarah was spotted in a pair of similar black leather boots with a suede panel.
But when she took to the park to take her two pet pooches for a wander she reverted back to the buckled pair of flats.

Healthy and happy: Sarah is enjoying her new lifestyle following a stint in rehab and splitting from her fiance last year

This time the singer looked extra chic as she went about her daily chores in her local Primrose neighbourhood on Saturday afternoon.
Wearing oversized sunglasses and her scraped back hair, Sarah looked radiant and happy as she took in the fresh air.
Carrying a large bottle of water, the healthy lifestyle is obviously suiting her well.

Worn out: The dogs were treated to a run in the park as their stylish owner paraded the area in her cute get-up

She giggled as the two dogs ran either side of her, and she ensured they too were well oiled as she poured water for them out of the bottle.
And they'd obviously exhausted themselves as Sarah then picked one of the pooches up as she left the grass and headed back home.
Sarah has recently overcome a number of struggles, including a stint in rehab and splitting from her fiance Tom Crane.
But she appears to be on the up as she sticks to her cleaner lifestyle.

Woof! Celebrity Apprentice star Aubrey O'Day dyes her dogs rainbow colours to match her own newly-hued hairdo

By LAURA SCHREFFLER

Doggone crazy: Aubrey O'Day stepped out with her two dyed pups yesterday in West Hollywood

She's recently gone from blonde to cherry red, and now Aubrey O'Day has gone one step further by dying her dogs' hair, as well.
The Celebrity Apprentice star stepped out yesterday in West Hollywood flaunting her cotton-candy coloured pups.
The appropriately named Ginger was dyed a bright pink and forced to wear both a leopard print doggie suit and a large hair bow.
Maryanne was a bright blue cloud of fur.
The 28-year-old reality star was just as brightly hued as her animals were.
She wore bright red jeggings to match her newly dyed 'do, as well as a haphazardly patterned blue and black top.

A doggone colourful bunch: O'Day dyes her dogs Ginger and Maryanne

Her sunglasses were even colourful, as they had lenses in sunset shades of red and orange.
She was lunching at the popular Los Angeles eatery Toast with her former Danity Kane singer pal Melissa Molinari.
O'Day has been dying her dogs for years, and hotly defended her decision to keep them colourful.
She has said in the past that she changes her dogs' appearances for different occasions.

Rainbow bright: The 28-year-old reality star has defended her dog dye decisions in the past

Right to Twitter: The Celebrity Apprentice star can't resist snapping her cotton candy-coloured puppies

For example, she once dyed Ginger green because she 'loves the Boston Celtics'.
She said of her now pink pup: 'She likes to have looks. It actually seems like such a taboo weird thing nowadays, but if you research online, you will see a whole underworld of dogs who are dyed.'
She also explained the dog dying process, saying: 'I do it like anyone would colour hair. She sits on my lap, and I have a brush, and I paint it on and use foils.'

I for one think this is a great idea: O'Day has a thing for hair dye

Prince William is 'appalled' after poachers butcher his friend's hand-reared rhino Max for his horn

By KERRY MCQUEENEY

Prince William has been left 'appalled' by the slaughter of his friend's rhino which was killed by poachers for his prized horn.
Endangered white rhinoceros Max was shot 17 times and had his horn hacked off by hunters in Kenya.
Despite rangers removing most of his horn as a protective measure against poachers, he was hunted for the small piece still remaining.
Six-year-old Max, who was featured in the documentary Last Chance To See, had been hand-reared by Ian Craig - the father of Prince William's ex-girlfriend Jecca.
Mr Craig owns the Lewa wildlife reserve in Kenya but the animal had been moved to the Ol Pejeta sanctuary after he reached adulthood, which is where the killing took place.

Shocked: The Duke of Cambridge was said to be 'appalled' at the 'senseless' killing

In 2001 the Duke of Cambridge spent six weeks volunteering at Mr Craig's conservation project and he met Max several times on later trips to Africa.
It was after his seeing Mr Craig's work with rhinos that Prince William became a patron of the Tusk Trust, which works to protect the animals.
A St James's Palace spokesman said: 'The Duke of Cambridge is appalled to hear about this senseless slaughter. He remains very concerned about rhino and elephant poaching and has asked Tusk Trust to keep him updated on this issue in Africa.'

Slaughtered: Max, who was hand-reared by Prince William's friend Ian Craig, was found shot and with his horn cut out

Butchered: Despite the fact that most of Max's prized horn had already been removed to protect him from poachers, he was killed for the remainder of it

Poachers kill rhino for their horns, which sell for £40,00 a kilo in Asia where it is wrongly believed to cure cancer.
Charlie Mayhew, co-founder of the Tusk Trust, said: 'Max's slaughter by poachers is a shocking illustration of what is now happening the length and breadth of Africa to meet the growing demand for rhino horn in China and Vietnam.
'The fact that this rhino had been hand reared at Lewa meant that many visitors to Lewa including our Royal Patron had the opportunity to get extremely close to him. It of course makes it all the more shocking and sad when you know the individual animal that has been poached.

Conservation work: Prince William with Tusk Trust co-founder Charlie Mayhew in the making of the 2001 television programme Prince William's Africa

'When Max grew up, he was moved to another sanctuary where he was killed.
'The Prince has taken a very close interest in the escalation of rhino and elephant poaching and it is something he feels passionate about trying to halt this illegal trade.'
Mr Mayhew added that the problem of rhino-poaching was now 'pan-Africa' and said that one reserve he spent time at in Zimbabwe had lost six rhinos so far this year.

Growing problem: Rhino-poaching is now 'pan-Africa' and one reserve in Zimbabwe has lost six rhinos so far this year

He said: 'Last year in South Africa alone they were losing on average a rhino every 20 hrs to poachers. This year South Africa has already lost more than 70.
'It is a real crisis and one that Tusk along with a number of other organisations is desperately trying to tackle. Last year Tusk invested substantial funds to help bolster security at rhino sanctuaries such as Lewa.'
