Jessica the white Sussex hen with a normal egg and the whopping 6oz egg which she laid on 31 July

For a free-range hen that has just laid an egg three times bigger than normal, Jessica looks surprisingly unruffled.
The egg weighs a hefty 6ozs - which is a staggering a quarter of a pound heavier than the average 2oz gram egg.
Couple Steve and Annie Egginton from Chew Magna, Somerset, were amazed when they saw what their one-year-old white Sussex hen had produced.

What a cracker! The GIANT egg laid by Jessica the hen - but it doesn't quite beat the world's largest which weighed a whopping 1lb

The egg was laid on the opening day of the Olympics - which also happened to be Annie’s 59th birthday.
Steve, 60, said that despite keeping chickens for more than three decades he has never seen anything like it.
He said: 'I’ve been keeping chickens for about 30 years now and I have never seen an egg this big.
'We’ve got three hens at the moment, all of them laying around two eggs a day, but they’ve never laid an egg like this before.'
The couple, who have three chickens, Jessica, Doris and Henryetta, say they have always produced eggs for themselves and their family members.

Jeremy Paget's hen, Hattie, laid an egg which weight a hefty 5.7oz, was three and a half inches long and eight inches in circumference

Instead of keeping the giant egg, thought to be the 'world's largest egg', they have since tucked into the extra large produce for breakfast.
Steve added: 'We used the egg to make scrambled egg on toast for the both of us for breakfast.
't was very tasty and a rather substantial meal for us both.'
Despite the monster weight of the egg it is not quite heavy enough to break the Guinness World Record for the largest hen egg, which currently stands at a staggering 1lb.

This giant egg was laid by a hen in Eastwood, Essex and weighed 5.7ozs

Last year Hattie then Hen of Four Marks, Hampshire, laid an egg weighing 5.7 ozs, was three and a half inches long and eight inches in circumference.
Hattie’s owner Jeremy Paget, 50, had only been rearing his nine chickens for only six months. He used his egg to make an enormous omelette.
And in 2010 Harriet the hen of Newquay laid an egg 4.5 inches long with a 9.1-inch circumference - both measurements half an inch longer than the previous record holder.
Tony Barbouti, a father of two, was one of 17 hens kept in his garden and fed on mash and vegetable peelings.
