It looks like this young stag needs to watch his weight after getting trapped in a school's metal gates.

The young male roe deer has been a popular sight with primary schoolchildren on their grounds and regularly walks in through the main gates.

But RSPCA officers were called to St Finian's Primary School in Cold Ash, Berkshire, after the animal got trapped halfway through the railings.

They rescued the frightened deer by bending the bars back with a car jack. RSPCA inspector Sharon Chrisp took a photograph of the deer in its predicament as she stood assessing the situation.

She said: 'According to local people this young deer was often seen in the grounds and would squeeze between the bars to get out.

'But he had obviously filled out more than he thought and when I arrived at the scene he was well and truly jammed in.

'He was unable to move either forward or backward and the expression on his face seemed to be more of embarrassment rather than anything else as he had managed to get his head through but then got stuck around the middle.'

An RSPCA spokesman said: 'The deer was checked over prior to being released and apart from a few superficial grazes the only thing that was badly injured was his pride.

'It seems the time has come that his fuller adult figure was no longer as svelte as he thought it was.'
