After a man? Get a dog! It's a major commitment but it could lead to a new love...

By Karen Wheeler

Puppy love: Karen Wheeler found a soul mate in her pet dog Biff, who also went on to find her a new man

Finding myself unexpectedly single in my mid-30s, I was given a memorable piece of advice by a friend's mother.

'Forget the high heels, the make-up and hanging out in bars and restaurants,' she said. (Not that I was doing any of the aforementioned at the time, as, following a traumatic break-up with my French boyfriend, I was too depressed to get out of my pyjamas most days.) 'The best way to find a new boyfriend is to get a dog.'

'Get a dog?' I repeated incredulously. 'And how does that work exactly?'

'Well, firstly, you have to walk it several times a day, which gets you out and about. And secondly, it's a really easy way to meet people. Everyone talks to you when you've got a dog.'

She made a canine pal sound like a 'must-have' accessory, but one that unlike the latest handbag, was guaranteed to attract admiring glances from the opposite sex, and not just envious looks from other women.

Dog lover: Jennifer Aniston, pictured here with Owen Wilson in the film Marley and Me, is besotted with her pet dog, Norman

I was doubtful. Yet this technique had worked for her (in her 60s, she had just married for the fourth time). And the dog strategy, I could see, had its advantages.

For a start, you wouldn't have to spend a fortune on high heels and designer clothes to attract admirers. Instead a good pair of walking shoes and an all-weather jacket would be your best pulling kit.

Secondly, rather than sitting around in bars and restaurants, imbibing vast quantities of alcohol and empty calories, you'd at least be getting some exercise.

Now, I am not advocating that you should get a dog in order to attract a significant other. And before I receive a rap on the knuckles from the RSPCA, I'd like to point out that a dog is not an accessory; it is a major commitment.

Matchmakers: In 101 Dalmatians, the characters, played here by Ioan Gruffudd and Alice Evans, are brought together by their dogs

You will need to walk it in all weathers - rain, hail and stifling heat - and when you are ill, hungover or have deadlines to meet. You will never again be able to go out in the evening and drink cocktails until dawn; and you can forget about spontaneous weekends away.

If the dog in question is a puppy, you must also be prepared for weeks, if not months, of chaos. In addition to love and commitment, a dog requires a lot of attention and a huge amount of patience and it can be expensive to keep (not unlike a man, some are thinking).

I had thought about getting a dog many times over the years. I worked from home, I liked long walks and I loved the idea of a small furry creature curled up under my desk.

The result of one rabbit's happy hour: Bunny smuggled into children's zoo before working his rabbit charm

By Beth Hale

Bunny hug: No one knows which mum had each kitten

Resident females Hazel, Willow and Ash, who share their pen with a large neutered male rabbit called Wilbur, had all sampled the new boy's charms.

All it took was a 60 minutes and a little bit of bunny charm.

Finding himself smuggled into the rabbit enclosure at Battersea Park Children's Zoo, Archie the lop-eared albino set about doing what bunnies do best.

By the time the inter-lop-er was discovered - the damage was done

And one month later Archie was proud father to a brood of 16 babies, which in the rabbit world are known as kittens.

Keepers at the zoo, previously home to just eight rabbits, now have 25 to care for.

But they have no idea where Archie came from. Anita Halligan, head keeper, explained: 'He just arrived one Sunday afternoon, someone obviously smuggled him in, but he wasn't spotted straight away.

'When we did realise he was there he had already been seen mating, we took him out straight away, but he'd been in for about an hour and by that time the damage had been done.'

Mystery: Keepers have no idea where Archie the Albino rabbit came from

Archie settled in to a new home in the guinea pig enclosure, and a few weeks later keepers noticed that Hazel, Willow and Ash appeared to have put on weight.

Just days later the three females gave birth - on the same day and within minutes of each other, meaning keepers are still not sure how many kittens belong to each rabbit.

Fortunately Archie - who has been castrated but is yet to move back in with his lady friends and Wilbur - has proved a hit with visitors. He's apparently 'a really friendly rabbit'.

The babies, who have not yet been sexed, will be shared between Battersea Zoo and its two other sites in Derbyshire and the New Forest. They are not available for rehoming.

Archie, who is thought to be aged about one, will be staying put.

But although the tale has had a happy, the zoo is warning other visitors not to do the same with their pets.

Fiona Vella, education and events manager at the zoo, said: 'We want to discourage others from doing the same, as rabbits are very difficult to match and settle down.

'If you take on the responsibility of keeping a pet, you have to follow through with that responsibility.

'Our resources here are also limited - we've already ended up with not one but 17 new rabbits.'

Shocking moment dolphin desperate to escape captivity leaps out of its own tank during marine show

By Mail Foreign Service

Shock: The false killer whale, a species of dolphin, leapt out of its tank during a marine show at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in southwestern Japan

This startling footage shows the dramatic moment a dolphin suddenly leapt out of its tank in a desperate bid to escape captivity.

The dolphin, a species known as the false killer whale, had been taking part in a marine show at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in southwestern Japan when it jumped on to the floor near its tank.

A U.S. tourist who was among spectators at the event shot the video footage and sent it to the former dolphin trainer for the 'Flipper' TV show.

Ric O'Barry, 70, who now makes a career out of freeing dolphins, said the video highlights the cruelty the animals suffer while in captivity.

The footage shows the stricken dolphin, called Kuru, lying on the floor as staff desperately wrap it in a mat and use a crane to lift it back into the water.

The other dolphins in the tank appear to be distressed and gathered around the side where the creature leapt out.

Mr O'Barry said: 'The habitat of that false killer whale is so unnatural it leapt out in desperation.

'It wanted to end it. Why does a person jump out of a building?'

Captive: The stricken animal lies on the floor as the other dolphins look on seemingly distressed

Plight: Staff wrapped the dolphin in mats and kept it wet with a hosepipe before it could be put back into the tank

Hideshi Teruya, who manages the dolphin section at the park, said the it suffered minor scratches and bruises on its head and fin, but had a healthy appetite for mackerel and squid after it was returned to the tank.

He said: 'It was playing around and jumped out by accident from the momentum.'
Kuru, which means 'black' in the local dialect, was captured six years ago in the seas around Okinawa.

Mr Teruya denied the captivity was cruel and said the tank was not overcrowded and followed aquarium guidelines.

But Mr O'Barry said the guidelines were inadequate and that dolphins were used to roaming for many miles a day, not swimming in a circle and doing flips at shows.

Rescued: The female dolphin, known as Kuru, is put back among her fellow creatures using a crane

Escape bid? A member of staff looks on as the dolphin leaps out of the tank. The other dolphins can be seen on the far side of the pool

He added that keeping them in a concrete box was cruel because it bombarded them with strange sounds and deprived them of their key sensory skill.

He said: 'It proves that captivity doesn't work. They are free-ranging creatures with a very large brain.

'They're self-aware and putting them in a small tank in a stadium setting is abusive.'

Mr O'Barry featured in a film about Japanese dolphin hunting - The Cove - in which he attempted to stop the slaughter of the animals for food in the town of Taiji.

It used hidden cameras to show how the dolphins are killed - workers herd them into a cove and stab they with spears as they writhe in the water.

The film, which won best documentary at the Oscars, opened in Japanese cinemas this month despite protests and threats.

Pet dog locked in home without food for two days while owner goes partying gets stuck making desperate bid for freedom

By Daily Mail Reporter

Trapped: The neglected dog gets stuck in a six-inch hole trying to escape

With desperation in its eyes, this neglected pet dog is stuck in a six-inch hole after attempting to make a frantic bid for freedom.

The Rottweiler-cross was left without food, water or fresh air for two days when her owner went partying with friends.

In a dash for freedom, distressed Bounce tried to squeeze through a small tumble dryer vent, only to become trapped.

Neighbours who spotted her forlorn face sticking out of the brickwork alerted the RSPCA who freed the pet with the help of firefighters.

Shocked inspectors found the flat, in Luton, Bedfordshire, filthy with faeces in every room.

Disgraced owner Montgomery Wandera, 24, was banned from keeping pets for the next five years after admitting neglect at Luton Magistrates' Court yesterday.

He was also handed a 12-month community order of 100 hours of unpaid work and told to pay £500 costs.

Hole in the wall: Bounce forced his way though a six inch hole used for the kitchen's tumble dryer vent

Prosecutor Mark Jones told magistrates that Wandera disappeared for two days to go away with friends in January leaving Nikita with no food, water or fresh air.
Speaking after the hearing, RSPCA Inspector Mel Fisher said it was unacceptable case of wilful neglect.

She said: ‘The owner failed in his duty of care for the dog as it was left unattended for two days and had its head caught in the same hole on a previous occasion.

‘We just hope this case sends out the message to the public that under no circumstances can animals be left to fend for themselves, and it is not acceptable to leave them unattended for long period of times.

Rescued: Bounce is freed by firefighters after she was found by neighbours

‘Fortunately in this case, the dog escaped relatively unhurt, but had we attended later rather than sooner, who knows what would have happened.’

Wandera admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal by unreasonably confining it in an environment that was detrimental to its well-being.

He told the court that he had been away with friends and his car broke down.

After making a full recovery, Bounce was been re-homed with a new loving family.

Oof! Now THAT'S going to hurt: Bloody day for Pamplona bull runners as two badly gored and five more hospitalised

By Mail Foreign Service

Tramplona! A bull falls on a runner during the Pamplona festival, which is a symbol of Spanish culture but has been condemned by animal rights groups

It may not look like it but the man lying squashed underneath a 1,000lb angry bull has got off lightly.

He was not seriously hurt, but two other men were badly gored during the famous running of the bulls at Spain's famed San Fermin fiesta today.

At least five other people were hospitalised after falling or being trampled by the animals, officials said.

Thousands took part in the dash to keep ahead of six fighting bulls and six bell-tinkling steers tasked with keeping the beasts together along the 930-yard course from a holding pen to the northern town's bullring.

The run lasted just under four minutes and produced panic when some bulls separated from the pack.

A runner is knocked down by a Cebada Gago fighting bull at Estafeta Corner during the second running of the bulls on the third day of the San Fermin festival

One stopped just before entering the bullring and paced in circles threateningly while staring at the runners.

Television images showed the first runner being gored in the chest and hurled like a rag doll to the cobblestones of one of the narrow streets where the bull run takes place in Pamplona's historical old quarter.

He remained on the ground dazed until he was taken away by rescue workers.

One man sustained serious injuries after being gored in the thorax, while a second man was gored in the left leg but was in better condition, said Fernando Boneta, a doctor at Navarra Hospital.

Crushing feeling: One reveller is squashed to the groun after this steer fell on top of him

Knock out: The runner lies stunned on the ground as the bulls run past during the traditional eight-day event

The more seriously injured man was a 22-year-old Spaniard, while the other goring victim was a 43-year old man from Dublin, authorities said.

The men were identified only by their initials.

Five more people were hospitalised in Pamplona for less serious injuries, mostly broken bones and bruises sustained in falls as they ran, though the images clearly showed other people being trampled.

They included a 49-year-old American, a 33-year-old Israeli and three Spaniards, the Navarra regional government said.

Thursday's gorings were the first for the series of eight bull runs held during the nine-day street festival that also features around-the-clock drinking that attracts tens of thousands of Spaniards and foreigners.

Cody Harrington, 22, was amazed at the size of the 1,100lb bulls as he ran alongside them for the first time.

Holy cow that's heavy: A leading ox of the Cebada Gago fighting bulls falls on an unlucky runner

A fighting cow leaps over revellers during festivities in the bullring after the second running of the bulls at the San Fermin festival

'They were about up to my shoulders, and it was intense,' the university student from Lake Tahoe, California said.

'Once I saw them running right next to me I got to the side and it was shocking how big they were.'

His 62-year-old father ran as well.

'It was a rush, definitely an adrenaline rush, the street is so narrow, you're right next to them and then they're gone like a shooting star,' said Jack Harrington, a dentist on a tour of Europe with his wife, son and two daughters.

An 18-year-old Australian who sustained three fractured vertebrae in the first race Wednesday remained in hospital on Thursday in a serious condition, according to the El Diario de Navarra newspaper.

He was identified by the newspaper as Nicholas Ward of Melbourne. The young man's father, Howard, told the newspaper his son was expected to remain hospitalised for two weeks.

A participant falls in front of Cebada Gago fighting bulls on the second San Fermin Festival bull run

Faces of fear: The festival is a symbol of Spanish culture, despite heavy condemnation from animal rights groups, and attracts thousands of tourists to watch the bull runs

An American was also injured on Wednesday in another event during the San Fermin party in which calves are released into a bullring to be taunted by young men.
The unidentified 22-year-old sustained a ripped scrotum from a horn injury, El Diario de Navarra said.

He received stitches at the bullring from emergency workers and was sent to hospital.

While gorings from the adult bulls with their huge horns are more likely to be fatal or cause serious injuries, the calves are also dangerous because they are more frisky, moving around the ring rapidly.

A spokeswoman for the hospital where the Australian and the American were taken said that no one was immediately available to provide an update on their conditions or more details.

The runs are broadcast live on Spanish television and the bulls that run each morning are killed in the evening in the bullring, their meat served up in Pamplona's restaurants.

Dozens of people are injured in the runs each year. Gorings produce the most dramatic injuries and generate extensive comment and analysis in Spain's media, though most runners who end up hurt fall or are trampled. Last year's festival saw the first fatal goring in nearly 15 years.

Sickening attack on 10-year-old girl's pet rabbit leaves Thumper with no ears

By Daily Mail Reporter

Sickening: Charice White, aged 10, with her pet rabbit Thumper whose ears were hacked off in the attack

A schoolgirl returned home from holiday to find her pet rabbit horrifically injured - after sick thugs chopped four inches off his ears.

Tiny four-old-month Thumper had the tops of his ears hacked off in the cruel attack when yobs snatched him from his hutch.

As these heart-breaking pictures show,Thumper - a Netherlands-cross - was left with bloodied stumps and a cigarette mark branded into the fur on his forehead.

The terrified animal, who was found drenched in blood, went missing for almost 12 hours after the ordeal, traumatised by what he went through.

Thumper had been sleeping in his hutch in the garden of his owner's home in Salterbeck, Workington, in Cumbria, when the attack happened overnight.

Now a police hunt is underway for those responsible, with officers describing the crime as 'horrendous' and urging anyone who knows anything to come forward.

Thumper's loving owner Charice White, aged 10, only discovered her favourite pet's fate when she returned from a school trip to Paris.

Her mum Joanne, who found Thumper two days before, has branded the vandals who attacked him 'sick and disgusting'.

She said: 'We left Thumper in his hutch when I went to bed.

'In the morning both the front and side gate were open and so was the hutch door. There is no way it could have got out of the garden on its own.

'I took my cat and dog to go help find him. We couldn't find him anywhere. But Thumper hopped back into the hutch in the evening.

Ordeal: Four-month-old Thumper was found savagely disfigured and has had to be re-homed in case the cruel attackers return

'When he came back to his hutch I realised his ears had been cut off.

'He had big floppy ears and half of them have been cut off now. When we found him the bleeding was still fresh.

'My cousin came to examine him. She breeds rabbits and has never seen anything like it.

'We took him to the vets. They told us to keep the wounds clean and give him antibiotics.'

Joanne has since asked her cousin to look after him because she is afraid the thugs will return.

Sharon Harkness, Joanne's cousin, who cares for animals and rabbits found abandoned and sick in the area, said Thumper was recovering, but is still is frightened.

She said: 'There's only about an inch left on his ears, the thugs took well over four inches of him, it looks like they've just cut it at the bottom.

'They are cowards I think it's absolutely disgusting, anybody that does anything to animals it is beyond words for me.

'He has been really brave because often rabbits and small animals will die from the stress of something like this, but Thumper is a fighter.'
