Jump: This dolphin leaped from the water several times as it swam alongside Mitchell Overton

A teen surfing in the wake of a yacht off St. Pete Beach, Florida, got a rare treat when a pair of curious bottlenose dolphins swam up beside him to play.
Keith Overton captured the remarkable encounter in the Gulf of Mexico on camera as he was filming his son Mitchell ride the wake created by a 53-foot Carver Voyager yacht. Michell was 'wake surfing,' riding his a wake board on the swells of the outboard engine.

Below the surface: For 30 seconds a pair of dolphins swam along side the boat, mostly just beneath the surface of the water

The dolphins suddenly appear alongside the surfer and appear to be riding through the wake, as well.
They incredibly manage to keep pace with the speeding boat.
For about 30 seconds, they swim with the surfer, jumping out of the water several times, to the cheers of the spectators on the boat.
Then, suddenly, they apparently lose interest and stop following.

Speedy: The dolphins kept up with the racing yacht. They can swim at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour

Bottlenose dolphins are relatively common in the Gulf of Mexico, who populations estimated at 35,000 to 40,000.
They can grow to 13 feet and weigh up to 1,400 pounds.
They eat mostly small fish, crustaceans and squid.
Dolphins are designed to be swift in the water -- they have been clocked at speeds of 25 miles per hour.
