Lola: She vanished after a major fire at Terisa Acevedo's home in Boston, which gutted the building - and there seemed little chance of finding her one month on

Lola's owner discovered her after hearing scratching in house

Terisa Acevedo never gave up hope of finding her long-haired dachshund.

The dog vanished after a major fire last month at her home in Boston, Massachusetts, which gutted the building. There seemed little chance of finding her one month on.

The 24-year-old believed the dog had either died in the blaze or run away - but she went back to the burned house on Monday and heard Lola scratching behind the door.

The dog was in the house when a fire ripped through it on February 23, and her stretch of almost four weeks alone included several nights of sub-zero temperatures.

Ms Acevedo was summoned back to her house when a neighbour heard her car alarm going off, but as she went to disable it she heard noises from inside the home.

She broke down the door and was amazed to find Lola still alive after finding food and water inside the house to keep her going.

The dog was taken to Angell Animal Medical Center’s emergency unit on Monday.

'They do come out of it very emaciated but they find a way,’ an Angell spokesman told WCVB Boston. ‘In this case she's just lucky.’

‘A lot of people were looking for her, her owner had been asking everyone around town, never gave up and really got rewarded for her effort.’

‘She's a young dog and she was probably eating something in there - probably nothing nutritious,’ Dr Megan Whelan, who has been treating Lola, told CBS Boston.

‘But there’s some mineral-like material on her x-rays. So she might have been getting into something in the house.’

Vets are performing tests on Lola, including x-rays to check on her lungs. She is said to be ‘upbeat’ and could go home as soon as Wednesday.
