Downcast Catherine Zeta-Jones and frail Michael Douglas get on with daily life in Manhattan

Deep in thought: Catherine Zeta-Jones walks her dog Figaro to Central Park in Manhattan as looks lost in her own thoughts

From the outside they look like any other normal family dividing the chores of daily family life.

Mother-of-two Catherine Zeta-Jones, 40, walked the pet dog Figaro to Central Park, as husband Michael Douglas, 65, dashed across the street with their daughter Carys, seven, to make it to school on time.

But the strain appears to be taking its toll on the wife of cancer-stricken actor Douglas, as she looked world-weary while walking the dog in Manhattan.

Frail: Husband Michael Douglas looks frail as he walks daughter Carys to school as he continues his battle with cancer

Dressed head to toe in black, and Catherine looked pensive and thoughtful as she strolled through Manhattan. But later she seemed much more relaxed as she chatted to dog owners in Central Park.

It's not hard to surmise the reason for her downcast look, as husband Douglas, 65, is in the throes of battling throat cancer.

But the family have battened down the hatches continuing with everyday family life, as Michael took charge of walking daughter Carys to school again today.

The couple also have ten-year-old son Dylan together.

Perhaps Catherine is still battling with the anger she expressed after it was revealed doctors failed to detect husband Douglas's throat cancer earlier.

Fury: Perhaps Catherine is still struggling with her anger at doctors failure to diagnose Michael's cancer earlier

She expressed her fury in an interview with People magazine. Catherine told People: 'He sought every option and nothing was found. I knew something was up. He knew something was up.'

But Zeta Jones said that her husband's chance of survival would have been improved had he been treated sooner.

"It makes me furious they didn't detect it earlier."

Douglas has been receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatment and remains hopeful and has an 80% chance of recovery from the stage four cancer.

But Douglas has not lost hope or his sense of humour. He said: 'The tumour is shrinking. The odds are good.'

And, he added: 'I haven't found God yet.'

Relaxed: But she looked more relaxed once she arrived at the park with her dog, and spent time chatting with fellow dog owners
