Hey, this is my tree! The squirrel peeks out of the hole which had earlier been drilled out by an industrious woodpecker
This is the remarkable moment that a cheeky squirrel drove a woodpecker nuts after the pair battled over a prime nesting site.
Having worked hard creating her nest in a tree in Florida, the woodpecker flew off to find herself some dinner.
But the Red Bellied Woodpecker was shocked when she returned to find a furry squatter making herself at home in the nest.
Let battle commence: The bird is prepared to fight for his territory and the pair start a savage fight
Opportunist: The woodpecker is eventually defeated and is forced to fly away, leaving the squirrel triumphant
The woodpecker got into a bit of a flap and frantically called for the squirrel to get out of her nest, but the stubborn squirrel refused to budge.
Thinking the woodpecker had flown away, the cheeky squirrel poked her head out of the nest, just as the angry woodpecker swooped round and began attacking the squirrel.
The two home-makers fought for several minutes before the woodpecker finally admitted defeat and flew off to set up home elsewhere.
Wildlife photographer Howard Reid was lucky enough to watch the drama unfold in his Florida garden.
The 63-year-old said:'The woodpecker was going crazy, flying back and forth and poking her head in the hole.'
'The squirrel finally emerged and the woodpecker went in for the kill, pecking away at the squirrel who definitely fought her corner.'
'The woodpecker came back for several days hoping to reclaim her nest, but she must have eventually gave up hope, as we never saw her again.'
