Tragedy: Natasha Elliot was killed by a train as she rescued her pet dog from the tracks

A girl of 16 was killed by a train as she tried to rescue her dog from the railway line.

Natasha Elliott was knocked down after the family pet wandered on to the tracks 500 yards from her home.

The dog, believed to be a German Shepherd called Zeus, survived but Natasha was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital by ambulance.

The tragedy occurred on Sunday evening as she walked with her boyfriend near her home in Morley, Leeds.

The dog strayed on to the tracks close to Morley railway station.

Yesterday more than 30 bunches of flowers were left near the scene by friends and relatives.

Natasha was due to take her GCSEs in the coming weeks. She lived with her father Wayne following the death of her mother several years ago.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: 'Natasha was believed to have been trying to retrieve her dog from the tracks when she was struck by the 17.52 York to Blackpool North Northern Rail service.

'British Transport Police received reports of the accident at 18.44, and attended the scene along with the local ambulance service. The girl was taken to hospital where she sadly later died.

'Our thoughts are with Natasha's family and friends at this difficult time. The incident is not been treated as suspicious and a file will be now prepared for the coroner.'

The tragedy has shocked friends and staff at her secondary school.

Morley High School headmaster John Townsley said: 'Natasha was a much loved and admired member of the school. She was a wonderful person with a cheeky smile and a mischievous sense of humour

'Natasha was looking forward to going to sixth form and had a fantastic life in front of her. Her death is a profound loss to the community and we will all miss her immensely.'
