Tanisha Hall suffered serious facial injuries after being savaged by the family's pet dog, an American bulldog

A five-year-old girl could be scarred for life after the family's pet dog savaged her face.

The girl, named by neighbours as Tanisha Hall, suffered severe facial injuries after she was attacked by the out-of-control pet at her home in Northampton on Sunday evening.

Tanisha's step-father suffered serious bite wounds to his arms and hands as he grappled with the large American bulldog in a bid to fight the animal off.

Both were taken to hospital but a police spokesman today revealed that neither had suffered life-threatening injuries.

Shocked neighbours described Tanisha, a pupil at nearby Bellinge Primary School, as 'lovely' and 'bubbly".

The dog, which is not a breed on the list of banned animals under the Dangerous Dogs Act, was contained by officers on the scene and is to be put down.

Police officers remained at the scene yesterday and it is not yet known if anyone has been arrested.

Neighbours in Hanemill Court, where the attack took place, yesterday described the scene.

One said: 'We came back around 8pm and there was an ambulance and police outside. A as we waited another police car and a riot van turned up.

'We could hear the dog barking non-stop for ages. It wouldn't shut up. It just seemed to be going crazy.'

Tanisha's mother, named by neighbours as Suzie Hall, 23, is said to be pregnant.

Another Hanemill Court resident said: 'That poor little girl, what happened is so horrible. She is a lovely, bubbly little girl, very bouncy and pretty.

'She's always out and about in the road dressed in pink and on her bike.

'Her mum has lived here for years. I've seen the dog being walked out in the street a few times.

'It's a bulldog type thing but I don't really like dogs so they all look terrifying to me.

'This is so sad I hear about dangerous dogs attacking kids on the news. I can't believe it has happened right here.'

Police Inspector Karl Sturman said: 'At 7.13pm on Sunday police were called to a report of a dog attack at an address in Hanemill Court.

'The family pet, a large American bull dog, had attacked a five-year-old girl. She suffered serious facial injuries.

'The injured girl's step-father also suffered injuries to his arm where he had grappled with the dog.'

The dog was due to be humanely destroyed this evening.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to call 03000 111 222.
