Abandonned: Sue Ashton with Reever, who was was found wandering the streets of Manchester after being dumped by his homeless owner

When Reever the dog was found wandering the streets a note in a bag tied round his neck told of his sad tale.

The letter - written by his homeless owner - read: 'If u find this dog (Reever), I'm sorry but I abandoned him.

'I am homeless with no way of looking after him. He is friendly, he just needs a better home than I could give.'

The heartbreaking slip of paper was found by a dog lover when Reever darted in front of her car in Blackley, Manchester.

The woman used to work for the Birch Pet Hotel kennels and cattery in Rochdale and she took him there.

They are looking after Reever until they can find him a new home.

Sue Aston, who has run the centre for 22 years, said: 'He is an absolutely lovely dog. He's as good as gold and all he needs is a loving home.

'It is obvious that whoever had him had to make the heartbreaking decision to give him up.

'It is fortunate because we think he was found shortly after he was abandoned.

Owner's plea: The heartbreaking note that had been left in a bag tied to Reever's neck

'He was terrified but otherwise fine.'

Sue has taken in abandoned animals before and fears the trend will continue because of increasing pressures on animal shelters.

'It is happening more and more now,' she said.

'Many of the shelters around here are only small and rely on donations, which have fallen over recent years, while the number of abandoned animals is increasing as people with financial pressures can no longer afford to keep their pets.

'The RSPCA has also been overwhelmed and has to turn many animals away.
'People don't realise the responsibility needed to look after an animal.'
