Catch of the day: The osprey plucks the unlucky tout from the waters of Loch Garten

For a quick takeaway meal, it is about as fresh as you can get.

And when this osprey plucked a trout straight from the waters of Loch Garten in Scotland, the remarkable image also proved catch of the day for wildlife photographer Mark Hancox.

The 48-year-old had been waiting in a hide for seven hours when a huge rush of air was the only warning before the bird of prey, with a wingspan of up to six feet, swooped past him.

'It came out of nowhere,' he said.

The loch is the heart of the UK osprey population. The birds vanished from Britain in 1916, but there are now 200 pairs here after they were reintroduced in the 1950s.
