Daffy over flowers: Charlie, who was made the runt of his litter, plays with daffodils at Chessington Zoo, Surrey

Cuter than any spring lamb, three-week-old meerkat Charlie curiously smells daffodils for the first time.

But his life was anything but happy just a week ago after his life mother and three little brothers and sisters all rejected him from their family.

Luckily, zoo-keeper Jenny Fisher, 25, took pity on the runt of the litter and began hand-rearing the tiny bundle of fur at Chessington World of Adventures, Surrey.

Now, after seven days of giving him a syringe of milk every two hours, they have become inseparable.

Miss Fisher said: 'It's just like being his mum, he is so cute, I jumped at the chance of looking after him.

'He has three and a half millilitres of formula milk every two hours and I'm totally shattered, but he's totally worth it.'

Simples: Zookeeper Jenny Fisher must feed charlie a small syringe of milk every two hours to keep him alive

Meer-kittens spend the first six weeks of life totally dependent on their mother.
But after this they quickly acquire a taste for worms and grubs – the only food they can find in their native Kalahari Desert in southern Africa.
